Gambling summit gathers public health experts in Massachusetts

Experts highlighted growing concerns about the online gambling industry, gathering in Boston, Massachusetts, for a first-of-its-kind conference. The event was organized with the help of Northeastern University’s Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI) and attracted not only experts but also public health professionals.

Massachusetts was among the states that legalized online sports betting several years ago, in 2023. With nearly a dozen licensed sports betting operators, the state’s gross gaming revenue hit an estimated $865.2m, while sports betting taxes have contributed $167.94m, data from the American Gaming Association reveals. Recently, Massachusetts lawmakers considered expanding the state’s gambling industry with the addition of iGaming. However, a poll earlier this year revealed that residents across the state oppose the potential online gambling legalization. In this context, one expert at the recent summit in Boston acknowledged growing concerns about iGaming. That’s the point of Harry Levant, PHAI’s Director of Gambling Policy, who was interviewed by WBUR and explained that the online gambling industry is out of control. Highlighting the negative impact of iGaming, the expert warned that the activity is already raising concerns about public health. Moreover, Levant pointed out: This is a conference about advocacy, action and results. This conference continues the effort to bring comprehensive public health regulation of the gambling industry and its sports partners, the expert added. The first-of-its-kind summit in Boston saw leading public health advocates, professors and researchers take the stage and discuss a number of hot topics concerning the online sports betting and iGaming industry, as well as their impact on consumers. Despite the public health concerns about online sports betting, earlier this month, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, the state’s gambling regulator, reopened the licensing process. This effectively means that more gambling companies may soon enter the Bay State.
