Maryland Student Takes Home $50,000 Prize from Scratch-Off Ticket

A university student in Maryland will return to school this fall $50,000 wealthier after winning a tier-two prize in a popular scratch-off game. Earlier this week, the Maryland Lottery announced that a student had won a tier-two prize in its Lucky 777 game.

A Towson University student, using the alias Lucky Tiger, chose to remain anonymous after a significant lottery win. A resident of Montgomery County, Lucky Tiger purchased the ticket at the Olney 7-Eleven located at 18120 Georgia Avenue. This $20 scratch-off game offers prizes from $20 up to $1 million. The winner, who has played lottery games since turning 18, initially believed he had won $5,000. When scratching off the ticket, he found an Autowin box showing a prize of $5,000. I knew it was a winner and handed it to my mom to double-check, said the student, whose alias is inspired by his school's mascot. Upon examining the ticket, his mother discovered additional winning boxes: three more Autowins of $5,000 each and a 3X symbol on a $10,000 prize—the total win amounting to $50,000. I was ecstatic when I realized the total was that high, he explained. Earlier this week, Lucky Tiger and his mother visited the Lottery headquarters to claim the tier-two prize from Lucky 777. The student plans to spend some of the winnings and save the rest. It was his first big win. He needs to pay for college, noted his mother.

The Lucky 777 ticket offers four top prizes of $1 million each. Following the latest tier-two win, there are five remaining prizes of $50,000 still available. The $20 scratch-off ticket provides a tier-three prize of $10,000, with 67 of these prizes still in play. In the lower prize tiers, players can win amounts varying from $20 to $5,000. The overall odds of winning any prize with the Lucky 777 ticket are 1 in 3.10.
