Following raids at a town in Myanmar near the border with China, close to 100 Chinese nationals were arrested on suspicion of participating in illegal online gambling and fraud. Law enforcement seized equipment, too, while confirming that the suspects will be charged in accordance with the established laws against illegal gambling and fraud.
Police operation results in arrests in Muse Township
As announced by local media outlets, a total of 85 Chinese nationals were arrested in Muse Township in northern Shan State of eastern Myanmar. The town is recognized as the largest land trade hub between China's Yunnan Province and Myanmar. Concerningly, at several locations in Muse Township, a comprehensive online gambling and fraud operation was established. Investigation into the unlawful activities resulted in the swift action of the authorities, who arrested the Chinese nationals on suspicion of illegal gambling and online fraud. In China, penalties for illegal gambling can range from hefty fines to up to 10 years in prison. Whenever there are cases of cross-border gambling or organizing gambling activities, those found guilty of such offenses may be sentenced to life in prison. On the other hand, China enforces severe punishment for cases related to fraud, online scams and other similar unlawful actions. While heavy fines are a possible penalty, oftentimes authorities confiscate assets, and may sentence those found guilty of such crimes to life imprisonment or even death.
Computer equipment, Starline Satellite receivers and mobile phones were seized
The investigation of law enforcement uncovered that online gambling and scam operations were set up in Muse Township's Kaungthum Tong, Suan Saw and Taw Yad neighborhoods, as announced by local media reports. Simultaneous raids at multiple locations resulted in the arrest of the 85 Chinese men, suspected of being involved in the massive online gambling and fraud operation. Police also seized nearly 300 mobile phones, 28 laptops and 30 computers from one building, while uncovering and seizing 18 computers and 46 mobile phones from a separate location. At a different address, more computer equipment and nearly 100 mobile phones were seized. Searching additional locations and premises, law enforcement found and seized nearly a dozen Starlink Satellite receivers, power stations, more computers and other equipment.
