NFL Insider Jason La Canfora: Deshaun Watson delivers a "good enough" performance in the Browns' preseason opener

Write-up

The Chicago Bears kicked off their 2026 preseason with an impressive win over the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field on Saturday. While the Bears savored their victory, the Browns focused on Deshaun Watson's return to the field. Noted NFL reporter and analyst Jason La Canfora shared his thoughts on the game. Deshaun Watson wasn’t outstanding against the Chicago Bears over the weekend, but he played well enough, La Canfora said in an exclusive interview. He commented that Watson completed the simple passes you expect him to make. According to La Canfora, Watson also showed commendable decision-making. He’s not as skilled at escaping pressure anymore. He doesn't rely on his legs like he used to. His pocket presence, holding onto the ball, poses some challenges, La Canfora elaborated. However, he noted that while Watson’s pocket presence has its issues, it’s an even bigger issue for Dylan Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. And Watson led a scoring drive—he had more positives than negatives. He distributed the ball well, acting like a point guard. That’s what you can expect. He’s not focused on deep throws, La Canfora added. Lastly, La Canfora pointed out that although Watson’s knack for explosive plays isn’t what it used to be, he must still go out there and earn his paycheck.
