On Thursday, the Thai police dismantled a criminal betting syndicate just as the much-anticipated World Cup kicked off. This group, known for their illegal online gambling operations, is also suspected of laundering money through cryptocurrency and mule accounts, according to a report from Bangkok Post. Authorities have identified 30 suspects in connection with the syndicate. So far, 19 have been arrested, as law enforcement executed raids aligned with the opening of the Football Betting Suppression and Protection Center for the World Cup. Among those apprehended, one individual admitted to being paid to let others use her bank account. This young woman received 2,000 baht, equivalent to $62, to serve as a mule-account holder since last year. The ongoing investigation revealed that the website Ole777.com generated at least 1 billion baht, or $30.5 million, from illegal gambling transactions. The criminal group employed various methods to disguise the source of these funds, including cryptocurrency transfers. While some suspects face charges of illegal gambling, others are accused of more serious offenses related to participating in an international criminal organization. Authorities are still working to identify the syndicate's leader.
