Thailand is considering legalizing casino resorts, inspired by other regional jurisdictions that have successfully boosted their economies through Las Vegas-style resorts. With Japan and Vietnam also making similar advancements, Thailand is eager to stay competitive and is moving forward with legalizing these entertainment complexes. The Thai government believes that this initiative will revitalize tourism and generate substantial additional revenue.

Thailand keen to show tougher stance on illegal gambling

As individuals anticipate the state's potential economic gains, authorities are simultaneously addressing the thriving illegal gambling scene. Earlier this week in Nakhon Nayok province, police arrested 218 individuals, identified as illegal bookmakers or gamblers, highlighting a shift in the accountability for gambling-related crimes. The Bangkok Post, a well-regarded local news source, first reported this development. The crackdown sends a clear message: both those who gamble illegally and those who facilitate such activities will face legal consequences. In this recent operation against illegal gambling, authorities seized approximately $90,000 in chips and cash used in these illicit ventures. Thai Deputy Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, emphasized the kingdom's commitment to applying maximum pressure on illegal gambling. This strategy aims to reassure neighboring countries and ensure the smooth regulation and potential legalization of Thailand's gambling industry.

Neighbors want Thailand to uproot illegal gambling altogether

China has raised new concerns with neighboring countries, claiming that its tourists have been kidnapped and forced into labor in Thailand. Notably, a well-known Chinese actor was among the recent victims. China has urged Thailand, along with other regional nations, to crack down on illegal gambling operations to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens. Gambling abroad is discouraged by the Chinese government, which is actively campaigning to deter citizens from traveling overseas for this purpose.
