Argentina has boldly joined the fight against illegal gambling, taking a significant stand alongside its regional peers. This week, a judge in the province of Misiones made a powerful move by ordering internet service providers to block access to over 100 illicit gambling websites.

Illegal gambling is dangerous to adults and children

The latest crackdown on illegal gambling marks a decisive blow against this rampant industry, following a plea from the Misiones Lottery, formally known as the Instituto Provincial de Lotería y Casinos (IPLyC), earlier this month. IPLyC alerted officials to the dangers posed by these illicit websites, which not only ensnare adults but can also be accessed by children—a cause for grave concern. These unlawful platforms harbor significant threats of addiction and gambling problems, putting entire communities at risk. In their appeal, the Lottery laid bare the stark reality: illegal gambling is a blight with devastating repercussions on mental health, particularly for the young and impressionable. The press release emphasized the critical need for online gambling sites operating in Misiones to have stringent safeguards in place to block minors, which is a non-negotiable condition for their operation. The Lottery further highlighted how online access to these illegal sites exposes children and vulnerable individuals to potential harm, with the possibility of leading them down a path of unlawful behavior.

Order issued to block access to 112 illegal gambling websites to protect Misiones residents

Judge Martín López has taken a decisive step by signing an order that demands internet service providers in the province of Misiones to swiftly block access to 112 illegal gambling websites. This move aligns with Article 57 of Law 27.078. Héctor Rojas Decut, the President of IPLyC, expressed, As a Lottery, we are committed to taking tangible actions to shield our youth, their families, and every resident of Misiones from the financial and emotional toll of illegal gambling. This initiative by the Misiones Lottery bolsters the ongoing efforts of local authorities in their fight against unlawful gambling.
