Japanese boy band member faces legal action over suspected involvement in online gambling.

Japanese authorities are actively pursuing individuals suspected of participating in online gambling, which is illegal in Japan. People involved, even just as players, typically face prosecution.

Shion Tsurubo, a 24-year-old member of the boy band JO1, is currently facing legal action after being referred to prosecutors for using an online gambling platform. Tsurubo has admitted to the allegations, according to The Japan Times, which cites local sources. Tsurubo reportedly confessed to investigators that he developed a strong compulsion to gamble, becoming obsessed with the activity, which led to increased spending. He also mentioned that he was initially unaware that online gambling was prohibited. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Tsurubo spent nearly 15 million yen, equivalent to about $104,000, at a specific online casino. His gambling activities began in December 2023 and ceased in August 2024 after he realized, through news reports, that such activities were illegal. The police have recommended a strict punishment for Tsurubo. However, he is not alone in this situation, as up to 3 million people in Japan potentially engage in online gambling annually, collectively spending trillions of yen.

A significant issue is the presence of websites targeting gamblers in the country, attempting to appear legitimate. Although online gambling is prohibited in all forms, many individuals remain unaware of this, potentially leading them to unknowingly commit an offense under Japanese law by playing on these sites. These websites often provide a Japanese-language interface and accept the local currency. Japan is beginning to seek international assistance to curb these illegal activities by reaching out to foreign authorities and regulators for support.
