Gold Coast Suns' Mark Opie in the clear after AFL concludes probe

Mark Opie, the Gold Coast Sunsteam manager, has been cleared of wrongdoing by the Australian Football League, which investigated the insider over potential conflict of interest due to his involvement with the franchise and a registered betting company.

While the brand Opie has faced scrutiny by regulators in the past and was indeed fined AU$100,000, the AFL found no information about wrongdoing in its most recent examination of the facts concerning the present situation. In 2024, the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) fined Okebet, citing breaches of gambling regulation, such as sending promotional materials to self-excluded gamblers. The AFL’s Integrity Unit investigated Opie’s connections with the betting company and was scrutinized as fears were cited that a league insider was too close to a betting company, and that created an inherent conflict of interest that could potentially threaten the integrity of the game. However, the Integrity Unit found no evidence of wrongdoing or Opie abusing his position to inform betting decisions. Okebet also sought to amend the situation by removing AFL betting markets from its platforms, specifically to dispel any lingering concerns that Opie may be abusing his position for unfair gain.

Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick actually stepped forward in public defense of Opie, arguing that the alleged conflict of interest was a very common practice in the league, and that few such cases have ever led to an actual undermining of the game’s integrity. While Opie is broadly speaking off the hook, the VGCCC has confirmed that it is reopening a probe into the betting company, according to a report by Crickey, an Australia sports media.
