IRS issues warning about illegal gambling with football season approaching

In a recent announcement, the IRS Criminal Investigation Atlanta Field Office emphasized that illegal gambling is a concern throughout the year, not just a seasonal issue. They highlighted the dangers of using unlicensed betting companies and urged sports enthusiasts to stay safe by choosing only licensed operators. Over the past year, IRS agents initiated 54 criminal investigations, uncovering $126 million in laundered funds. Impressively, 84% of those involved were convicted, with an average prison sentence of just over three years. The agency advised, If you're betting this season or anytime, stick to state-licensed platforms, avoid offshore and crypto-based sites, and remember to report any winnings. They also encouraged anyone who encounters suspected illegal gambling to submit a tip.

IRS-CI's Chief, Jarod Koopman, emphasized that illegal gambling involves much more than just placing unlawful bets. Our investigations frequently uncover money laundering and tax crimes linked to these operations. By following the money, we can take down larger criminal networks, he noted. Demetrius Hardeman, Special Agent in Charge at the IRS Criminal Investigation Atlanta Field Office, highlighted that illegal gambling is far from a victimless crime. He pointed out that criminal organizations often use the proceeds to finance other illegal activities both in the U.S. and globally. When people engage in illegal gambling, they are unknowingly supporting extensive criminal networks that negatively impact our communities and society as a whole, Hardeman concluded.
