Japan Intensifies Efforts Against Illegal Gambling; Fuji TV Employees Arrested

Japan is intensifying its efforts to combat illegal gambling by targeting unauthorized operators and notably those residents involved in online gambling. As gambling is a punishable offense in the country, numerous prominent figures and ordinary citizens have been arrested for their alleged or confirmed gambling activities.

Yoshitaka Suzuki, a manager responsible for planning at Fuji TV Network, has been arrested by Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department. Authorities allege that Suzuki was involved in illegal gambling from September 22, 2024, to May 13, 2025. Suzuki admitted his guilt, confessing to participating in illegal online gambling, which he learned about from senior colleagues also implicated in the activity. Before his arrest, Suzuki was questioned by an internal investigation team but denied any wrongdoing at that time. It is reported that his total expenditure on gambling reached approximately 100 million yen, or $679,000. He is not the only employee involved; Kenta Yamamoto, a 27-year-old announcer from the network, has also been arrested.

Japan has actively pursued legal action against individuals involved in illegal gambling, including those who use offshore gambling websites. Recently, a member of the boy band JO1 was arrested for engaging in illegal online gambling activities. The Japanese authorities are not just targeting citizens; the National Diet is also working on legislation to reduce the influence of illegal gambling platforms within the country. Additionally, Japan is committed to raising public awareness about the illegality of online gambling with foreign operators. This initiative is aimed at educating the public and preventing cases involving high-profile gamblers.
