Summary

  • Unibet is now confronted with a fresh challenge in the Netherlands: a weekly fine of €75,000.
  • The new enforcement action arises from a failure to adhere to sports betting regulations, the regulator claims.
  • According to the KSA, this case carries a hefty fine: a maximum of €450,000.

The Netherlands Gambling Authority has slapped Optdeck Service Ltd, known as Unibet in the country, with a significant penalty. This decision comes after the regulator discovered that Optdeck, despite being licensed to offer games of chance and sports wagers, engaged in illegal sports betting activities from October 2022 to May 2025. The authority found these breaches serious enough to demand a €75,000 fine for each week a violation occurred, with the total penalty capped at €450,000. Unibet reportedly offered proposition bets, enticing players to wager on specific events during games, such as the number of corner kicks or yellow cards in soccer matches.

Unibet targeted in the latest Dutch gambling regulator's enforcement action

The regulator has registered another serious violation, with Unibet offering gambling markets to participants under the age of 21. Despite multiple communications from the regulator expressing these concerns, they have seen little to no improvement from Unibet. A statement from the website reads: The KSA has repeatedly addressed the concerns over Unibet's betting options. Unfortunately, there has been insufficient improvement and a real risk of future violations. Under Dutch gambling laws, betting on certain matches and events is strictly prohibited to safeguard the integrity of sports and prevent any manipulation. The KSA has taken similar actions against Unibet before. Back in June, they warned the company for allowing players to use the autoplay feature in an online slot game. Last December, Unibet faced a hefty €400,000 fine for accepting wagers from self-excluded gamblers.
