Summary

  • Kalshi has been mentioned in a new case involving a long-time teleprompter operator for President Trump, who was caught trading on the President's speeches.
  • The man is reportedly resolving the issue with the CFTC after Kalshi tipped them off about his three months of betting on President Trump's speeches.
  • According to ABC News, Perez is not likely to face criminal charges and is expected to resolve the issue with the CFTC.
Kalshi, the prediction market platform, has found itself at the heart of another controversy, despite the issue not being of its own doing. A longtime teleprompter operator for President Donald Trump has allegedly exploited the popular platform to make trades, leading to personal gains of tens of thousands of dollars.

Three months of speech trading resultsin $100,000 windfall

Kalshi addressed an ABC News inquiry with a statement from Bobby DeNault, their Head of Enforcement, saying that the surveillance team quickly identified the abuse and referred it to the appropriate regulator for further investigation. ABC News, citing sources familiar with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), reported that the Commission has started an investigation. Gabriel Perez, the individual involved, is reportedly in the process of settling the allegations. Perez has been serving as a technical assistant to the President, operating his teleprompter since 2016. According to the report, he may have made as much as $100,000. The CFTC stated that Perez executed several trades over three months, yielding a six-figure profit. He was aware of President Trump’s tendency to deviate from the teleprompter and improvise. Moreover, the CFTC's investigation found that Perez would sometimes pull out of trades early to avoid losses if he anticipated the President skipping over certain sections. This news surfaces at a time of increased scrutiny over political trading on prediction market platforms.

Suspect not to face criminal investigation as per sources

President Trump has faced scrutiny for thousands of stock market trades and announcing early information access for paid Truth Social members on his social media platform. Despite this, a White House spokesperson told ABC News that strict ethics guidelines are followed at the White House. Settlement discussions for Perez are progressing as prosecutors have dropped the idea of a criminal investigation, with Perez admitting to some of the trades. Previously, a US soldier was arrested for allegedly engaging in trades related to military actions involving the US armed forces in Venezuela.
